    Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world’s transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people’s quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.

    Job Responsibilities:

    • KP-SAM Code Development Intern where you will work with others in the development of KP-SAM, an advanced thermal hydraulic system simulation code. This code will be used by Kairos Power safety analysts to perform all safety related transient analyses related to the Kairos Power Fluoride-cooled High-temperature Reactor (KP-FHR). KP-SAM is based on the MOOSE environment, which allows for the code to be coupled with structural materials, porous media, and resolved computation fluid dynamics codes to perform multi-scale, multi-physics calculations of the complex reactor system. Your contributions will include the development of new reduced order models and methods, establishing coupling between KP-SAM and other relevant tools, verification and validation, and documentation.
    • Salt Chemistry Intern where you will bring experience related to chemical testing equipment design, chemical engineering, and laboratory operations. In this role, you will contribute to the molten salt testing program assisting the engineering design and technology development programs for the FHR. The candidate should have knowledge of basic chemical properties, mechanical design of test equipment, experience calibrating test equipment, comfort with laboratory safety practices, and empirical data interpretation.
    • Mechanical Thermal/Fluid Analysis Intern where you will work with the Engineering Design team to evaluate problems related to our nuclear reactor systems. You will need to have course work in heat transfer and fluid dynamics and some experience using heat transfer or analysis code. You will be assigned real projects with defined due dates. There will also be one on one mentorship from our Mechanical Engineers.
    • Test Engineer Intern where you will bring experience relevant to design, construction, operation, and data acquisition and control of complex mechanical systems. In this role, you will contribute to the engineering design and technology development programs for the Kairos Power Fluoride Salt-Cooled High Temperature Reactor (KP-FHR). The ideal candidate has a hands-on approach to design, assembly and testing of mechanical systems, with either hands-on experience working in an R&D test lab or experience using SolidWorks CAD and other tools for design.
    • Testing Instrumentation and Controls Intern where you will bring experience relevant to design, implementation, and operation of control systems for complex thermal/fluids experiments. In this role, you will contribute to the operation of test facilities for development of the Kairos Power Fluoride Salt-Cooled High Temperature Reactor (KP-FHR). The ideal candidate has a hands-on approach to design, assembly and testing of control systems, with either hands-on experience working in an R&D test lab or experience using LabVIEW and analytical tools for design.
    • Nuclear Safety Intern where you will learn to perform, nuclear safety analyses, and develop technical documentation to contribute to the Safety Analysis team and in aid of the safe design of the Kairos Power Fluoride-cooled High-temperature Reactor (KP-FHR).
    • Reliability Engineering Intern where you will bring knowledge of nuclear engineering and Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA). In this role, you will contribute to the safety case for an FHR demonstration project. The Reliability Engineering Intern will work in close consultation with mentors to conduct sensitivity analysis of key areas of uncertainty for a nuclear reactor PRA.

    Job Requirements/Qualifications:

    • Education: 3+ years of education in Nuclear, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or equivalent. Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD students are encouraged to apply.
    • Knowledgeable about nuclear reactor system analysis, specifically molten salt cooled systems
    • Experience with the DOE MOOSE framework
    • Experience with control system software (LabVIEW, PLCs, etc.)
    • Experience with 3D modeling and prototyping (SolidWorks preferred)
    • Familiarity with fundamentals concept of logic and statistics such as Boolean analysis, logic diagrams and fault-tree analysis
    • Experience with computer programming/automation and ability to develop further experience in R, RMarkdown, Python, C/C++, Git, FORTRAN, LaTeX, Bash/Shell/Batch scripting, Docker, etc
    • Good fundamental knowledge of thermal engineering
    • Knowledgeable about fluid mechanics, instrumentation and/or data acquisition
    • Strong knowledge of fundamentals of nuclear technologies
    • Proficiency with scripting and/or scientific programming languages
    • Experience with laboratory chemistry experiments
    • Experience in basic mechanical design and assembly
    • Ability to work with hazardous systems using engineering safety controls
    • Proven team player with excellent verbal and written communication/presentation
    • An excellent technical communicator: Proactively listen for and identify the team’s needs, anticipate priorities and keep the team apprised of relevant information
    • Highly-motivated: Able to complete tasks working alone, on time, and with attention to detail
    • Enjoy working in a laboratory setting as a member of a team

    Preferred Qualifications

    • MS or PhD in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering
    • Industry internships and/or research laboratory experience preferred.
    • Experience with a manufacturing environment is a plus.
    • Experience working in a laboratory or industrial environment on thermal/fluids testing is desirable, along with experience using associated laboratory equipment and hand tools.
    • Experience with control system analysis and design and OPC UA communication is a plus.
    • Experience using/developing MOOSE-based apps, e.g., SAM, Bison, etc.
    • Experience using/developing systems analysis codes, e.g, SAM, RELAP, SASSYS, TRACE, etc. a plus.
    • Knowledge and/or training in Nuclear Reactor Safety, Computer Science and Version Control.
    • Experience with CFD tools such as Star-CCM+, Ansys Fluent, OpenFOAM, Nek5000.
    • Knowledge and/or training in Nuclear Reactor Safety and Version Control, e.g., Github.
    • Deep experience using R, RMarkdown, git, LaTeX, Bash/Shell/Batch scripting.
    • Experience with Probabilistic Risk Assessment methods and analysis.
    • Experience with HAZOPs or FMEA.
    • Experience with radiological dose assessment.
    • Familiarity with Python, Docker.
    • Experience in uncertainty quantification, including Monte Carlo methods.
